Happy Birthday to the mixes! Okay, well admittedly it's been over a year since I've started making the mixes, but this is the official 52nd mix making it the birthday mix. Boo-yeah. Also, since it's late, I've made it a double... 20 songs for your listening pleasures.
After this I won't be making the mixes quite every week. They've been really fun to do, but at the moment I have a few too many things on my plate making it nearly impossible to get them out... the fact that this mix is over 2 weeks late is the proof.

It's Friday! and the weather outside is puttin us in the mood for some blissed out, sunny oh-man-it's-nearly-summertime kind of music. The music you imagine blasting out down the street during the day where you sit around on grass clutching some cider and wishing time would just stop.

Friday is upon us and we started out miserable and grey and have now ended up bright and sunny. It's also Good Friday, which in Ireland translates to official 'House Party Friday' also known as Zombie Jesus Day. Just remember the old saying: April Showers Bring May Flowers.

It won't take you long to guess by the name of this mixtape that the weather in Dublin is slowly turning from bitter to springy. Today especially was a lovely sunny breezy day that was perfect for cycling around the city... hence music for breezy Spring days and activities. Typically, last week when I was going out of my way to find decent covers I struggled, and now this week I came across possibly two of my favorite covers of all time by accident. It's pretty psyche-pop-rockin with the usual dose of electro-pop that I always tend to slip in. Nice.

I've never been a big sap that's worried about Valentines Day traditions. Yeah I'm guilty of being smug and in a relationship and all, but I'm a bigger fan of romantic gestures that aren't suggested by a card company or restaurant offering a prix fixe.

This week's mix demonstrates, without a doubt, that my taste is quite varied - starting with an oh so brand new remix of Noah & The Whale, before descending into a spangly cowbell-laden disco section, until moving into garage music, new & old, and then finishing off with some trusty girl groups. Dreamy electro? Yep. Shameless disco. Uh huh. Cher? Sure! Belarussian Garage? Well of course!
Nope, there is no overall theme here, except that, YAY! It's the weekend once again. However I have noticed (quite accidentally) a few oddities between the varying tracks & genres. George Clinton of Parliament Funkadelic produced one of the more girly-girl group tracks, and of course, there is a very young Cher in there sounding very Specterific and looking very Joanne from the Human League. Indeed.
I might have some news coming up in the next few days about my mixtapes which involves presenting a lil monthly Internet radio show... watch this space!

Welcome to this week's mixtape. I am pleased and very excited to present my inaugural Irish-only mix. Well after 38 weeks it's about time eh?!
As much as us residents of Ireland complain about the incestuous nature of living on this small island, I've always felt there is a great community of support (and yes, healthy competition) within our small yet dynamic music scene. I am very very lucky to have actually worked with almost every act featured in today's mix, and some of them I get to consider good friends. As a member of Talulah Does The Hula, we have shared the stage with Candy in my Heels, Dark Room Notes, Lost Chord, Sleep Thieves and Sweet Jane. Andrew from Twin Kranes engineered our single, and over the years of being involved in music in Ireland we've also shared the stage with Conor from Villagers (back when he was an Immediate, I was a Neosupervital and my other Talulah's were Chalets) and in our past lives we've also worked with the amazingly talented Valerie Francis... lucky lucky us!
A lot of these bands have awesome stuff going on at the moment: John Shelly & The Creatures are on tour to support their new album, Lost Chord just released a new EP last night, TwinKrane's amazing album is doing really well across Europe, Both Dark Room Notes and Valerie Francis are up for the Choice Music Prize, Valerie is also up for a Meteor for best Irish female, Sweet Jane are long-listed for the Meteors most promising new act (vote for them here!) oh there's lots more news between all of them I'm sure.
There will definitely be more Irish mixtapes, which I am already looking forward to, and please feel free to send me any tracks you'd like me to feature. I cannot promise they'll all make it in as I'm pretty picky about my music, but I will give everything a listen.
This week's mix is close to home... literally. It's all about the family - I'm home with my family and I imagine a lot of people will soon be with their family, or at least their adopted family. I'm gonna get a bit personal with this mix, dedicating it to my dad who just got great news regarding a recent health scare.
Anyways, you'll quickly figure out the little theme I've got going on, family, Daddy, Mother, Sister, Baby... you get the picture. Luckily there are some great tracks that feature these lil family themes. A francophile mix of music either created or inspired by the City of Lights. Light and breezy, electro dizzy, even a bit hip hop - the city is a mix of culture, the old and the new, the genius and the mad. There were so many brilliant "Paris" songs I wanted to use that I had trouble narrowing it down to just ten songs... so this week, you get fifteen!
Paris is a place that inspires the entire world, and for good reason. This mix is my little musical love letter to Paris.

This week I'm a cheaty-mc-cheaterson. Or, well, a person with a life maybe. I've got a wedding in Bristol this week, and therefore am not going to be anywhere near a computer for nearly FIVE WHOLE DAYS. Whoa! Awesome I know. Therefore, no mixtape 17 will not be happenin' this week. But fear not, for I have a solution if you have some kind of an addiction to mixtapes of a Friday.
For those of you "in the know" you'll know that I spend a good bit of my time playing in a band, Talulah Does The Hula. Said band were asked to put together a mixtape for State.ie of all the music which is a bit inspire-y of the kind of music TDTH makes. Actually, when I say "the band" were asked, it's more like I told State's editor that I was going to give him a mix under the banner of Talulah whether he liked it or not. Luckily for me and the band, they seem to have liked it - or at least, not minded it enough to publish it to their site. So instead of an "enhanced m4a" this week, I will instead leave you with "one that I did before". Do be sure to check out the other mixes they've got there on the site. They're pretty much all way better than the badly mixed one I did.

(Typically, though, now that it's Friday, the Dublin weather has completely cooled! Arrrgh)

This mix gives you almost an hour of the best summer daytime party tunes that I could find. Apologies to those expecting some electro this week, but if you enjoy good, sunny music for 'chillaxing' (As Peter Andre would say) you'll enjoy this wide mix of 60s classics, Northern Soul, a bit of 70s Reggae, some south-of-the-border lounge, and of course a lil dollop of funk on top. Strangely, this is all music I was hugely into at around age 18 and so get a bit wistful for now that I'm, ahem, a good bit older.
This week I'm also doing something a lil different, inspired by Aoife's "I Can Has Cook" blog, as well as amazing pork tenderloin I cooked the other day, I'm giving you a recipe that, to me, suits the music and the summer weather just perfectly. You will find it just below the track listing.

Grilled Spicy Ginger Lime Pork Tenderloin If you don't eat meat, this would still be an amazing recipe for grilling sauce for fish, shrimp or even veggies. It's pretty much all about the marinade. I'm not usually a pork fan, but I can make an exception with the tenderloin - literally a tender, non-fatty cut of meat that is shaped a bit like a tube (*update... just found out that they call em "pork steaks" here in Ireland - oopsies). When marinated and grilled, it's like a lovely melt in your mouth steak-like meat. I buy my tenderloin from Dublin's best butcher, Brady's, but I'm sure you can find em in any supermarket with a decent meat section. Also, as this is a marinade, you might get started the night before you plan on actually cooking this, for ultimate marinated perfection...
Marinade: 6 large cloves garlic -- chopped or pressed 2 tbsp soy sauce 3 tbsp fresh ginger -- grated Juice of one lime 1/2 cup olive oil cayenne pepper to taste (I like mine super spicy) salt and pepper to taste
Stick the meat in the marinade, get it good and coated and pop in the fridge for a couple of hours, or even ideally overnight.
When you're ready to cook, wrap the tenderloin in tin foil and make sure to dribble some of the marinade on top. Grill/BBQ/Broil (whatever works for you) for about 10 mins, turning the meat every so often so that it cooks all over. If you're using a BBQ, take it out of the tin foil and place it directly on the grill, and cook for another 10 mins or so, basting with marinade and turning every so often so that it gets nice and brown. If you're using an oven grill/broiler, open the top of the tin foil and grill/broil for another 10 mins, still turning the meat and getting it nice and brown. With both cooking methods, feel free to cut into the thickest part of the meat to check that it's cooked through. It's normal (and lovely) for the tenderloin to be a bit pinker in the middle, but being Pork, does need to be thoroughly cooked.
Carve up into little medallions, drizzle a bit of the marinade on top & serve.
This would be really tasty served up with say, grilled Sweet Maui Onions/Zucchini (Courgettes to my Irish mates) or French Beans sauteed in ginger, onions & balsalmic. It was very Asian. So maybe even steamed bok choi or Asian purple broccoli.

This week's selection of tracks are a little bit more mellow and melancholy than usual. My hometown is burning out of control and it's giving me those weird nervous sadness pangs, so my mixtape is a little bit more... sad... this week. I like to think of this mix as a little love letter to Santa Barbara - Starting with my old neighbor Mike Love's band, The Beach Boys, it's also got some of my 90s guilty pleasures stuck in there, and then ends with a track that Lydia reminded me of, which you'd have to be a robot not to get a little heart-flutter listening to...
Don't fret however, let's not get too depressed. It is, after all, the start of summer, so take it easy, sit and chill and drink some icy cider and close your eyes and relax and let it all slip away. It's Friday.
