Friday Mixtape #53 - Totally Wired

We are back. After a three month break I felt ready to re-visit this little podcast. Inspired by events upcoming this weekend. That's right, Ireland is gearing up once again for the Electric Picnic festival in Stradbally. It's our own mini-Glasto.

I don't think I'll be making the trip down this year, it isn't much fun when your best mates aren't there, so we've all decided we'll make our own fun here at home. Not sure if it will cheer me up, or tide me over, but I've put together a mix of some of the artists that are going to be down the country this weekend.

Enjoy! No promises as to when I'll be back for the next mix, so go ahead and subscribe or simply watch this space!

Friday Mixtape #52 - The Birthday Mix

Happy Birthday to the mixes!
Okay, well admittedly it's been over a year since I've started making the mixes, but this is the official 52nd mix making it the birthday mix. Boo-yeah. Also, since it's late, I've made it a double... 20 songs for your listening pleasures.

After this I won't be making the mixes quite every week. They've been really fun to do, but at the moment I have a few too many things on my plate making it nearly impossible to get them out... the fact that this mix is over 2 weeks late is the proof.

But fear not, I'm not giving them up completely, they just won't be weekly. And of course you can always catch my monthly radio show I'm still doing for Radio Nowhere. http://radionowhere.org

Anyways, enjoy this mix, enjoy the summer and keep subscribed so you don't miss the next mix, whenever that may be. xoxo

Friday Mixtape #51 - The Chills

This week, rejuvenated from a small break, I've been inspired but a lot of disco-y-electro-hip-pop. But with a certain down-played relaxed vibe running throughout at the same time. A diverse group of artists who all probably fancy dancing late into the night and sitting and talking until the sun rises.

I also have to thank my brother for introducing me to a few of these fun mashed-up tunes. Oh yeah, and of course included my own band's brand new track. Ha.

Delayed gratification...

I know I promised that I was nearly to the 52 weeks of mixtapes mark... and I was due to treat you with #51 on Friday, but the truth is, this week I have been lazily enjoying my home land of California. Much time in Santa Barbara was spent with family and friends so I felt they deserved my time more than the music. I'll be back with a bang next friday, the official release date of my band's next single, Don't Panic... which you can officially listen to on the mySpace.

Friday Mixtape #50 - Distant

A breezy jangly all-over-the-place mix this week. It's up and down and in the wind and indecisive about what it wants to be when it grows up. I can certainly relate.

Click here to download the m4a
or simply listen in the player below

Alternatively you can download & listen to the mp3 version on the sister site loveactionmixtape.blogspot.com

I also should mention that this blog is officially ONE YEAR OLD. Happy birthday to my mixes! Yeah, yeah, I suppose we've got to wait til mix #52, but technically this is mix 51 as way back in August I put up the mix I did for State.ie and didn't number it... and I also took one holiday from the mixes... so there you go. I've also noticed certain trends in my listening -which actually shows up in this current mix (80s, Girl groups, Postcard Records, Classixx remixes you get the jist). I'll probably plan something special for mixtape #52...

But back to the current mix: here's hoping those who are distant have the chance to return now that that pesky volcano has stopped his belly rumbles. In fact, so distracted was I by the pleasant tunes, I didn't even notice there were only 9 songs! Oops, forgive me.

Included this week:
1. Eternal Summers - Fall Straight Back
2. Elvis Costello & The Attractions - I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down
3. Orange Juice - Poor Old Soul
4. ChloƩ - Distant
5. Groove Armada - Paper Romance (Classixx Remix)
6. Human League - The Lebanon
7. Mystery Jets - Flash a Hungry Smile
8. Aztec Camera - Lost Outside The Tunnel (Postcard)
9. Beirut - A Sunday Smile

Friday Mixtape #49 - Season in the Sun

It's Friday! and the weather outside is puttin us in the mood for some blissed out, sunny oh-man-it's-nearly-summertime kind of music. The music you imagine blasting out down the street during the day where you sit around on grass clutching some cider and wishing time would just stop.

It's also my ode to my homeland of California. A lot of blissed out California themed songs included. Been missing that place a lot lately... and lucky me, I'll be there visiting in just a few weeks. Yay!

Friday Mixtape #48 - The Reflex

Spring has sprung! Yet I give you some dark electro and 80s. What can I say, that's how I roll. Get your sexy slow drum machine on tonight, life is too short. At Love Action headquarters we're definitely mourning the loss of Malcolm McLaren, so I've included two acts that were his brainchild. I've also included... to the public's ears for the very first time the official remix of my band's song Bad Boyfriend. It's the 'Cast Aside Brides Remix' and it's dark and epic and makes our band want to float away off stage in a giant hot dog. I'll be sending a link to download that track soon.
Enjoy!

Friday Mixtape #47 - Dark Days

April you say? Well only that of Irish April which means Sun on Sunday, Rain on Monday, Snow on Tuesday. Friday is upon us and we started out miserable and grey and have now ended up bright and sunny. It's also Good Friday, which in Ireland translates to official 'House Party Friday' also known as Zombie Jesus Day. Just remember the old saying: April Showers Bring May Flowers.

Friday Mixtape #46 - Sunshine Yellow

It won't take you long to guess by the name of this mixtape that the weather in Dublin is slowly turning from bitter to springy. Today especially was a lovely sunny breezy day that was perfect for cycling around the city... hence music for breezy Spring days and activities. Typically, last week when I was going out of my way to find decent covers I struggled, and now this week I came across possibly two of my favorite covers of all time by accident. It's pretty psyche-pop-rockin with the usual dose of electro-pop that I always tend to slip in. Nice.

Have fun this weekend, enjoy the weather... GO OUTSIDE! x

Friday Mixtape #45 - Use Somebody - The Covers mix

This week's mixtape is another themed mix... it's made up entirely of cover songs... and covers done in my favorite way... completely different to the original! It's pretty mellow, which might be a good musical choise for my fellow Irish dwellers as we need to calm ourselves after the Paddys Week festivities.

Also included of course is a Big Star cover in honor of the late Alex Chilton who passed away this week. Enjoy.

Weekend Hangover Mixtape #44 - Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now

Another non-friday mixtape.... and this time I can only blame the drink. To help those of you like me, who over-indulged this weekend, I've put together a bit of a relaxing come-down mix. Even if you aren't nursing a sore head, it's a very Sunday evening appropriate mix, a tinge of the sad and melancholy, as relaxing and calming as possible.

Enjoy the rest of your day off, stay in your jammies, relax and drink sugary tea and chocolate and close your eyes and listen to this mix.

Weekend Mixtape #43 - The Get Go

This week, due to life's usual way of getting in the way, Friday's mixtape became a "weekend mixtape". So I decided to give my mix a theme of something some of you might be likely to do at the weekend... exercise. Well, speaking for myself I've been in training for the Great Ireland Run which takes place in April.

This mix is designed to be the perfect upbeat driving accompaniment to any type of workout; whether it's an exercise kind of workout, or a workout on your dancing shoes. I'd say it's particularly good for spinning as the speeds change from double time to halftime, but my plan is to use it while running, or even to time myself in the gym. It's exactly an hour, with a five minute cool down & stretch at the end. Oooh wee!

So if you feel like sweating it out... or just pretending to, give this mix a listen.

Sunday Mixtape #42 - Real Life

This week's mix is designed to be filling like a big Sunday dinner. It's got lots of unusual flavors that meld together into a exciting musical melange. It's a bit disco and uplifting and dancy, which is unusual for a Sunday I suppose, but it's meant to pick up your spirits despite the fact the weekend is coming to a close. There is a little fun treat hidden in there which is a song from an old band I was in that has since been re-jigged into a song for my current band. Ooooh sneaky.

Late but with reason... and goodies

Apologies, but I have been in the midst of doing a million projects as of late. Usually I find the time to do it all, but instead I've been doing more sleeping than usual, hence having less time for project number one million and one. For that reason, today's scheduled mix will be a bit tardy.

BUT, I do have the mix all planned and worked out, so while it won't be a Friday mix, you will get it soon...

In the meantime, I can offer you a listen of my brand new radio show for Radio Nowhere.

Innnn-joy!

Friday Mixtape #40 - Girls & Boys In Love

I've never been a big sap that's worried about Valentines Day traditions. Yeah I'm guilty of being smug and in a relationship and all, but I'm a bigger fan of romantic gestures that aren't suggested by a card company or restaurant offering a prix fixe.

BUT

I do love a good love song, and what better time to let my inner sap who enjoys romantic music come out but at Saint Valentines... right? So here you go. Go on and burn it on a CD for that someone special and pretend you made the mixtape yerself... (except for that bit where I talk at the start... so maybe nevermind)

Anyways, enjoy all you lovers and non-lovers and wannabe lovers... this mix is for you

Friday Mixtape #39 - Weekend

This week's mix demonstrates, without a doubt, that my taste is quite varied - starting with an oh so brand new remix of Noah & The Whale, before descending into a spangly cowbell-laden disco section, until moving into garage music, new & old, and then finishing off with some trusty girl groups. Dreamy electro? Yep. Shameless disco. Uh huh. Cher? Sure! Belarussian Garage? Well of course!

Nope, there is no overall theme here, except that, YAY! It's the weekend once again. However I have noticed (quite accidentally) a few oddities between the varying tracks & genres. George Clinton of Parliament Funkadelic produced one of the more girly-girl group tracks, and of course, there is a very young Cher in there sounding very Specterific and looking very Joanne from the Human League. Indeed.

I might have some news coming up in the next few days about my mixtapes which involves presenting a lil monthly Internet radio show... watch this space!

Experiencing Technical Difficulties - Please Stand By

Techonology... when it works, it's AWESOME

When it doesn't, you want to start pulling out your hair and you begin babbling about how much stuff you have to do and how you'll never meet this deadline etc. etc. etc.

Well, I've been attempting to upload today's mixtape for approximately 3.5 hours. I can't connect to my iDisk, I can't upload to Soundcloud. Hell, I can't even get RapidShare or MediaFire to work. I'm assuming it's my upload connection. It appears to grind to a halt once 2mb gets up there. Like, completely. Grinds. To. A Halt.

I don't think I have a limit, I can only assume there is either something fucked with my ISP, or maybe someone else on the same ISP is uploading some mega-huge files. Either way, I apologize. I have no other method for giving you this week's mix.

BOO.

Friday Mixtape #38 - The (Inaugural) Irish Edition!

Welcome to this week's mixtape. I am pleased and very excited to present my inaugural Irish-only mix. Well after 38 weeks it's about time eh?!

As much as us residents of Ireland complain about the incestuous nature of living on this small island, I've always felt there is a great community of support (and yes, healthy competition) within our small yet dynamic music scene. For a country with a population about half that of the city of LA, we have a stunning amount of amazing musicians. Seriously, think about it.
Download the mix here or listen in the player below:

If you wanted to download the mp3 version of this mix, you can do so on the sister site, LoveActionMixtape.blogspot.com

I am very very lucky to have actually worked with almost every act featured in today's mix, and some of them I get to consider good friends. As a member of Talulah Does The Hula, we have shared the stage with Candy in my Heels, Dark Room Notes, Lost Chord, Sleep Thieves and Sweet Jane. Andrew from Twin Kranes engineered our single, and over the years of being involved in music in Ireland we've also shared the stage with Conor from Villagers (back when he was an Immediate, I was a Neosupervital and my other Talulah's were Chalets) and in our past lives we've also worked with the amazingly talented Valerie Francis... lucky lucky us!

A lot of these bands have awesome stuff going on at the moment: John Shelly & The Creatures are on tour to support their new album, Lost Chord just released a new EP last night, TwinKrane's amazing album is doing really well across Europe, Both Dark Room Notes and Valerie Francis are up for the Choice Music Prize, Valerie is also up for a Meteor for best Irish female, Sweet Jane are long-listed for the Meteors most promising new act (vote for them here!) oh there's lots more news between all of them I'm sure.

Featured on this week's mix:
1. Candy in my Heels - Enough
2. Dark Room Notes - Let's Light Fires
3. Sleep Thieves - City Lights
4. TwinKranes - Amino Acids
5. Sweet Jane - Black Eyes
6. Lost Chord - Cheats
7. John Shelly & The Creatures - Angeline
8. Talulah Does The Hula - Lovesick Losers
9. The Ambience Affair - Devil In The Detail
10. Valerie Francis - Slow Dynamo
11. Villagers - The Meaning of the Ritual

There will definitely be more Irish mixtapes, which I am already looking forward to, and please feel free to send me any tracks you'd like me to feature. I cannot promise they'll all make it in as I'm pretty picky about my music, but I will give everything a listen.

Friday Mixtape #37 - Hit

This week's mixtape is the usual old-n-new mushed together to give you a lil upbeat Friday feeling. It's pretty happy even if the lyrics aren't (strange but true in most of these tracks). A lil new music trendy, with a bit 80s nostalgia thrown in for good measure, a small dose of early 90s, and finally rounding off with some 60s soul to make your boogie cup runneth over.

Personally most of these songs take me straight back to where I first heard them, whether that be watching "Real Genius", a 1984 gem starring Val Kilmer, or sneaking to watch 120 minutes at 12am on a Sunday night in 1992 (oooh cheeky!) Now who wouldn't like a big kick of nostalgia on a Friday? Who I ask ya?!

Friday Mixtape #36 - Blue Skies

This week's mix is a bit confused, a bit jangly pop, some dark and retro electro infused with vintage orchestras playing behind mini pop-ette crooners. It hints at every decade between now and your parent's hey day. It's pleasant, uplifting, and hopefully will get you excited about warmer days to come in the months ahead.

Bring on the blue skies.

First post of the new year and it's a bit belated as far as the rest of the "New Year" lists go, but I allowed myself a nice holiday break from the mixtape for a week, so apologies if you're listed out.

This is a first for the mixtape - as every song included has already been featured before - but you see, that's my theme.

When I started putting together these mixtapes back in April, I didn't realize how much of an undertaking it would be. It is hugely time consuming, and sometimes I'm just not feeling any of my music enough to get inspired, forcing me to actively seek out new music at a rate which I've never done before.

I've listened to some amazing bands this year, and for that, I thank my lil mixtape. My only worry sometimes was that the rate in which I was consuming music was becoming overwhelming, whereas in years past I would listen to some key tracks over and over and over, I found some of the music I was listening to was becoming disposable - a depressing thought as a musician. I would listen, love, and then simply forget.

So what I decided to do was put together a mixtape of songs I might have NEVER come across if it weren't for the fact I was putting together a mixtape! Pretty much every single one is from the past year, so it seemed quite appropriate to call it my Love Action Best-Of 2009. There were loads of others I loved that didn't quite make it in, but considering over the last 34 mixtapes I used something around 360 tracks, and probably 355 bands... well, it was easy to miss a few.

I also feel like I need to give a big thank you to some of the main sources I use to discover new music - and most of them also offer free tracks to download - so thank you to Nialler9, WinnieCooper, State.ie, NME DailyDownload & of course HypeMachine.

Enjoy! And please let me know if you had any favorite mix tracks over the last year.
x Jessie
